Competitions

The Analytical Chemistry
Division will present two cash awards ($250) for the best
graduate student poster presentations during the Analytical poster session. Only graduate students are
eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.
The Biological and Medicinal Chemistry
Division will present up
to three cash awards ($100 each) to the best graduate student oral presentations, and up to three cash awards
($100 each) for the best graduate student poster presentations within its field. Only graduate students
are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.
The Inorganic Chemistry
Division will present three cash awards of $100 each for
the best graduate student poster presentations. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. For
consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.
The Macromolecular Science &
Engineering Division will
offer two cash awards: one prize of $250 for the best oral presentation and another prize of $250 for the
best poster. There will also be one prize of $500 sponsored by Xerox Canada for a presentation, oral or
poster. Only graduate students will be eligible for any of these awards. Any student who wishes to be
considered for an award should indicate this on the Abstract Submission.
The Organic Chemistry
Division will present a number of cash awards for the
best student oral and poster presentations in one of the Division's sessions. Only graduate students
who are members of the CSC are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract
Submission. Awards are subject to the Division's financial situation and are at the discretion of the
Executive.
The Surface Science
Division will present two cash awards, one of $100 for the
best graduate student poster presentation and one of $50 for the second best graduate student poster
presentation. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract
Submission.

The Chemical Education
Division will grant
one $500 travel award to a participant at the
annual Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) Conference. The award will be given to an undergraduate or
graduate student in chemistry, chemical engineering, or chemical technology, who is making an oral
presentation at the CSC Conference in a symposium organized by the Chemical Education Division. Students are
encouraged to present papers pertaining to their experiences as an undergraduate student as it relates to an
educational aspect of their chemistry, chemical engineering or chemical technology studies. The application
deadline is April 20. All applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Chemical Education Division,
Noel George
The Chemical Education
Division will offer two awards ($350 and
$150) for the best undergraduate or graduate student paper presented in chemical education sessions at the
conference. The prizes are intended to encourage students to present papers of general interest concerning
the following critical evaluation of their educational experiences: innovative learning/teaching strategies
and materials, other topics that address chemical education.
The Environment
Division will present one
cash award ($250) for the best student oral presentation and one cash award ($250) for the best student
poster presentations within its field. For consideration, indicate on the Abstract
Submission.
The Physical, Theoretical and
Computational Divisionwill
present a total of four cash awards for the best student oral (1) and poster presentations (3). For
consideration, indicate on the Abstract Submission.
Undergraduate Student Poster
Competition
Deadline for receipt of abstracts was April 16,
2009
The Undergraduate Student Poster
Competition will be held in Wentworth ABC
in the Hamilton
Convention Centre on Tuesday evening, June 2, 2009.
Posters will be accepted in the general areas
of Analytical, Biological/Medicinal, Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry.
You must indicate on your Abstract Submission
that you wish to participate in the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition.
Eligibility
This competition is open to current
undergraduate students, or students who graduated within the last four months, in all branches of
chemistry.
Posters may be based on research done as part of an undergraduate course, co-op project, or summer job in a
university, government or industrial setting.
Graduate students, who have not completed more than two semesters of their graduate studies program, may
present a poster on work done as an undergraduate student on the condition that the poster topic is different
from their current research topic.
Poster
Specifications
Poster boards, 4 feet (high) x 8 feet (wide),
will be available in Wentworth ABC for poster presentations.

Posters may be installed beginning at 09:30 on
Tuesday morning; they must be installed by 16:30 on Tuesday afternoon.
Posters must be removed immediately after the
poster session; posters that remain will not be saved.
Awards
Two awards will be given out in each of the
five divisions.
We are grateful for additional support for the
Inorganic competition given by Professor Michel
Gagné.
In addition the Hamilton Section of the CIC
will provide a $200 award in each of the five divisions if there is a poster in the division that meets their
criteria; we are exceedingly grateful for their generous support of this competition.
No poster may win more than one
award.
The awards will be announced and presented at
the Chemical Education Awards Reception held on Wednesday morning, June 3 beginning at 10:20 a.m in Albion A
in the Hamilton Convention Centre. All participants are invited to attend.
Registration and
Accommodation
Participants in the poster competition must
register to attend the CSC conference. The early registration fee (deadline April 30) is $80 for
CIC/CSC student members.
If you are not a member, the student
membership fee is $26.25 or $28.25, depending on the province of your residence.
